Several facts in this book are inaccurate. The author’s claim of an insider’s perspective is misleading. Graduating from a service Academy does not indicate insider knowledge about the admissions process. The author never mentions that he has ever worked in or spoken with anyone in the admissions departments at the service academies. The author claims that all service academy applications are weighted similarly. This is not true. The Air Force Academy gives 60% of the weight to academics, 20% to extra-curriculars, and 20% to selection panel judgment. The U.S. Military Academy gives 60% weight to academics, 30% to leadership, and 10% to athletics. The Naval Academy gives 75% weight to academics, 19% to leadership potential, 5 % to physical aptitude, and 1% to technical interest. Also, interviews with admissions representatives are required for admittance to the Air Force Academy and Naval Academy but not the Military Academy at West Point. If the author misses facts this large, the validity of the whole book is questionable in my opinion. The editorial review claims to know what admissions officials are looking for, yet zero admissions officials are ever quoted or referenced. Official admissions websites for the individual academies are a much better resource, and they are free.
